The US today announced an assistance of $1 lakh for the victims of the recent floods in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Announcing the aid package, US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said "the heart-breaking personal loss, the destruction of homes and property, and the loss of cattle and crops have been devastating. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this time of great loss and tragedy".
He also offered condolences to the families of those killed and to those rendered homeless in the disaster, a release from the US Embassy said.
Over the past seven years, the US has provided over $16 million for disaster management activities in India, working in partnership with experts here to share knowledge and expertise and improve preparedness to protect the country's vulnerable citizens, the release added.
The US Ambassador said he had a successful meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary on bilateral issues.
"We had a very successful meeting for bilateral programmes and education initiative," Roemer said.
