The Election Commission today issued notice to three-time BJP MP and the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Uttara Kannada Ananthkumar Hegde for violating model code of conduct by allegedly making certain anti-minority remarks.

The commission has sought replies from Hegde within two days and booked cases against him under different sections of IPC and the Representation of Peoples’ Act, electoral authorities said here.

Hegde, while addressing party workers at Ankola on March 21, had reportedly said that if Muslims do not stop violence, it would be difficult for them to celebrate Id-Milad. Electoral authorities had said last week that it received two complaints against Hegde for using “caste and communal factors” in his speech.
