Even as a series of five-star hotel projects lying in a limbo in Uttarakhand, Sir Biotech India Ltd, a multi-domain company, is making an entry into the hotel business in the Uttarakhand capital.

The company has recently been given permission by the state revenue department to acquire 1.7 hectares of land at village Danion Ka Danda in Dehradun tehsil for constructing a sprawling five-star hotel.

A government nod to this effect has already been given by principal secretary revenue P C Sharma, a government official said. The company is expected to invest Rs 100-200 crore in the five-star hotel.

Interestingly, Sir Biotech India’s plan to set up a five star hotel in Dehradun comesat a time when a series of swanky hotels has failed to take off in the city.

The recession seems to have plagued most of these five-star hotel projects, officials said. Besides, nearly one dozen small hotels, which are being constructed at different areas of the state, have also not made any headway, they said.

The Emaar MGF and Inter Continental Hotel group had entered into an MoU with the state tourism department in 2008 to construct the five-star hotel on PPP mode. The tourism department had given 10 acres of land to the company which it got from oil major ONGC at Garhi Cant area here as part of the tourism project.

However, the project has failed to take off following a prolonged standoff between the consortium and the government over the construction of a mall.

Another five-star hotel project, the first in the Kumaon region, is coming up in Rudrapur, the industrial hub of Uttarakhand, with an investment of Rs 100 crore.

The hotel is being set up by Doon Valley Technopolis Pvt Ltd, a joint venture company of two real estate companies — Assotech Ltd and Supertech Ltd. Though the company had initially claimed it would complete the project in one year, the recession seems to have delayed it.

Similarly, the five-star hotel project of ace shooter and Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra in Dehradun has also failed to take off due to administrative delays and recession. Bindras had submitted a proposal to the government in 2009 for setting up a five-star hotel on their nine-acre farmhouse here.

The government has also given permission to Bharat Hotels for constructing a five-star hotel near the hill city of Rishikesh. But no activity has started yet, the officials added.
