Nearly 1,256 industrial units have started production in Uttarakhand taking the benefit of the Central Industrial Package (CIP).
The state government is expecting an investment of Rs 30,000 crore through these industries, says a new report “Sahi Disha Sahi Kadam” released by Chief Minister B C Khanduri on the 8th foundation day of the state.
All these industries, including heavyweights like ITC, Tata Motors, Delta, HUL and Nestle have set shops in Uttarakhand taking the benefit of the special package comprising excise and income-tax incentives for a period of seven years, effective from 2003.
The state government received thousands of investment proposals under the package. Out of these, 1,256 industrial units have already started their production with an investment of Rs 10,489 crore. At least 64,835 people have got employment in these units.
This apart, nearly 2,318 units are in different stages of implementation through which an investment of Rs 13,765 crore is expected. Over 100,000 people are expected to enjoy employment in these units.
The state government has also announced a special integrated industrial policy with an aim to promote industrial growth in the hilly and remote areas.

In the new policy, provisions for infrastructure development along with various incentives and subsidies have been made for the industries, which intend to set up unit in the hilly areas. In this category, the government has received proposals worth Rs 350 crore.
The government is also promoting the development of industrial estates in the private sector to ensure the availability of land for industrial purposes. A large number of local youths have also been benefitted by employment in the new industrial units in the state.
In the financial year 2007-08, nearly 41,880 people got employment in the SME sector, the report added.
