Value-added tax (VAT) is needed for development of Uttar Pradesh. This was the conclusion reached at a seminar conducted by the Indian Industries Association.

Addressing the seminar on the "Need for VAT in Uttar Pradesh" organised by the IIA, the speakers urged the government to ensure high tax observance and convenient book-keeping.

IIA office-bearers made a strong plea to the government to plug the loopholes and embrace VAT.

Uttar Pradesh is one of the few states to have shunned VAT even as the rest of the country has adopted it.

The seminar was headed by IIA President Tarun Khetrapal. Also present on the occasion were B H Naqvi, trade tax consultant; Sanjay Kaul, former IIA president and Anil Gupta, general secretary-IIA.
