The nationwide bandh evoked a mixed response but there was no let-up in violence in the Jammu region, the epicentre of the agitation against the revocation of the land transfer. Around 60 people were injured in clashes in Jammu today.

The situation turned violent in Indore in Madhya Pradesh when saffron activists forced shop-keepers of a minority community to down their shutters. Later, both the groups indulged in heavy stone-pelting and arson in Khajrana, Malharganj, Pandrinath and Chhatripura areas in which four people were killed and 20 injured, police said.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in four areas. Minor incidents of violence were reported in Bhopal and Tikamgarh.

Normal life was hit in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Assam and Jharkand where stone-throwing and road blockades were reported. One flower vendor was stabbed in Bhilwara in Rajasthan.

The bandh call had little or no response in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Tripura. In Delhi, no untoward incident was reported but several arterial roads were blocked. Shops and business establishments remained closed in a few areas.

In Maharashtra, public transport buses were pelted with stones in several cities, including in Mumbai. A group of VHP workers ransacked a Kashmir Emporium shop in South Mumbai's Colaba area.

The bandh had a lukewarm response in Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat since the state BJP did not take part.
