The proposed coal mine and washery project of Tata Sponge Iron Limited being taken up near here has drawn flak from the affected villagers and the environmentalists at the environmental public consultation meeting held at Gopinathpur village.

The local villagers of the five villages affected by the project turned up in large numbers at the meet and took exception to the project, citing environmental concerns and rehabilitation issues. The villagers have demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh per acre of land.

The villages affected by the project include Gopinathpur, Jhintipal, Kosala and Nandichoda. Environmentalists have also opposed the project fearing that the project would push the region towards destruction.

“About 400 acres of dense forest would be wiped out by the project. Besides, there are five perennial streams located in the mining lease area. The project is also objectionable as it is being developed close to the Satkiosia elephant reserves and tiger reserve”, said Prasanna Behera, secretary, Natural Environment and Wildlife Society.
