Altogether 87 persons were arrested at Muchipara, Bowbazar, Talatala and Watgunge areas in the city in connection with the disturbances.

The state's home secretary, Leena Chakraborty, said that an average 55 to 60 per cent polling was recorded in the elections to all the civic bodies in the state.

The police recovered 57 live bombs, one country-made revolver and two shot-guns from the city's Taltala, Muchipara and Hastings areas.

Chakraborty said that one person, identified as Debraprasad Saha, was rushed to hospital with bullet injuries in his head. A sergeant and a constable suffered splinter injuries while dispersing a bomb-throwing group.

The police said that some miscreants ransacked a CPI-(M) office in the Muchipara area of the city.

Meanwhile, polling in Haldia, Durgapur, Coopers' camp civic bodies besides by-poll in eight other wards in different districts passed off peacefully, according to the state's Deputy Inspector-General of Police (HQ), Prasun Mukherjee.

However, reports from Durgapur said the polls were marred by a bomb explosion which injured two persons this morning.

One person was admitted to DSP Hospital with serious injury. A strong police picket has been posted in the area.
