Visakhapatnam port, a major port in the country working under the shipping ministry, registered a decline in cargo handling during the first quarter of the current financial year as compared with the corresponding quarter last year.
The port handled only 14.57 million tonne during current year's first quarter as against 14.90 million tonne last year.
It handled 59.13 million tonne in 2012-13 as against 67.40 million tonne in 2011-12. 'The shipping ministry has fixed a target of 70 million tonne this year. For the current quarter, the port has lost about 0.7 million tonne cargo in iron ore and petroleum products handling.
