Having set up records in achieving highest levels of cargo through put among all major ports, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT)has also become the first port in the country with electronic port management following successful implementation of Rs.18.2 crores I T project since April 2002.
According to sources, the I T project is the first-of-its-kind in the Indian port sector. The I T applications implemented in the first phase of the project include port operations management system, railway operations management system, materials management system, personnel management systems and financial management systems, which resulted in enhanced productivity and new work culture.
The major components of the project comprise multi-service campus network.
The port is now able to render shipping bills within 24 hours of the vessels departure. In the second phase, the port is investing another Rs 3 crores to enable online cargo operation management which directly benefits the port users immensely, the sources added.
