In an attempt to get an edge over other international long-distance operators, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is turning aggressive on value-added services like Home Country, India Direct and toll-free corporate information.

K P Tiwari, executive director, operations, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, said: "We are the best international long-distance operator today. Because of our long-standing tie-ups with all major international carriers, we can offer a host of value-added services that other operators cannot."

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd will be aiming at the corporate sector for its toll-free "800" service that will enable companies to make information about their products and services available through phone.

All a subscriber has to do is to dial a pre-assigned number from anywhere in the world and information about the company will be available to him free.

The company will pay for the call. Around 50 companies are already availing the service. "We are also eyeing the hotel and tourism sector," Tiwari added.

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd expects revenue from value-added services to grow to around 10 per cent in one year from 5 per cent at present.

The company is also offering the India Direct service whereby subscribers travelling abroad can make calls to India from anywhere in the world without paying immediately.

The company has also set up four manual exchanges to handle trunk calls.

"No other operator can claim to offer the kind of services that Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd is offering," Tiwari said.
