The Cabinet note on implementation of the Montek Singh Ahluwalia committee report on securitisation of state electricity board dues has extended the period of waiver of interest dues from February 2001 to September 2001.
The note has also decided that the original condition mandated in the report to make at least 15 states agree to participate in the scheme should be diluted. This has been done since a number of state governments are yet to agree to the terms laid out in the Ahluwalia committee report.
The extension of the period for the waiver of the interest dues and penalty means that the burden of the repayment on states stands reduced. The committee had recommended that 50 per cent of the penalty and interest burden on the principal dues of the SEBs till February 2001should be waived.
