The 897cr project envisages private sector involvement for collection & disposal of waste.

The last date of bidding for the Rs 897-crore Integrated Waste Management Project has been extended from November 24 to December 1 by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

According to GHMC additional commissioner Ram Mohan Rao, the date has been extended at the request of the shortlisted companies that are vying for the project.

Of the 22 companies, which came forward to take up the build, develop, operate and transfer (BDOT) project, GHMC has pre-qualified six. Of these, Haryana-based Neel Metal Fanalca Environment Management Private Limited has withdrawn from the bidding process citing lack of adequate time as the reason.

The other shortlisted companies are Noida-based Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Limited, Delhi-based IL&FS Waste Management & Urban Services Limited, Chennai-based Veolia Environmental Services Limited, Surat-based Gujarat Enviro Protection & Infrastructure Limited and Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited of Hyderabad.

The water management project envisages involvement of the private sector for collection and disposal of waste generated in the city. The Infrastructure Corporation of AP (Incap), which played a consultancy role, has structured the project.

Rao said initially two zones out of the five in the city would be handed over to the successful bidder. “Depending on their performance, we will hand over the other three zones,” he told Business Standard adding that the existing garbage transport vehicles with GHMC would be handed over to executors of the project.

GHMC currently has 600 vehicles of various kinds ranging from autorickshaws to 25-tonne trucks engaged in garbage transportation. Of these, nearly 60 per cent vehicles are outdated.

Incap managing director KV Reddy said, besides other things, the main source of revenue for the private company would be carbon credits and advertisement rights at land fill stations and on transportation vehicles.
