About 1,500 MW power can be generated from urban/municipal waste by setting up waste energy projects, according to a study conducted by Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) and Ernst & Young.

The study indicates that about 40,000 million tonne of solid waste and 5,000 million cubic metre of liquid waste is generated every year in the urban areas of the country, which can be suitably recycled for power generation.

The cost involved will be around Rs 200 crore, which could be generated through municipalities and local governments with subsidies from the respective state governments, the study said.
