Amid reports of a weak monsoon this year, the government on Wednesday assured that water storage in reservoirs across India was better this time than last year.

"The storage position during the current year is better than last year and the average storage of the last 10 years," the ministry of water resources stated.

According to the data, 85 key water reservoirs that cater to power and irrigation needs have 42 billion cubic metres (bcm) of water - 27 per cent of their total capacity and twice that of last year's storage at the same time.

Northern India, with six reservoirs in three states, was the best performing region, with a storage of 6.8 bcm or 38 per cent of total capacity, as against last year's 31 per cent. Eastern India, with 15 reservoirs, had a storage of 6.4 bcm or 34 per cent of capacity.
