Among the nine Congress rebels who contested the West Bengal assembly elections in spite of being warned by the party, only one managed to win, while two managed to botch the chances of Trinamool Congress candidates.
Rebel Congress candidate Hamidul Rehman backed by Congress MP Deepa Dasmunshi won the Chopra seat in North Dinajpur district defeating CPI-M candidate Anawarul Haque. Rehman polled 64,289 votes.
The official Trinamool Congress candidate SK Jalaluddin wound up in the third position with 6944 votes.
Eight other rebel Congress candidates fielded by MP and strongman from Murshidabad district Adhir Chowdhury and Nadia district Congress president Sankar Singh lost the polls.
Chowdhury's candidates from Sagardihi, Hariharpara, Bhagabangola and Jalangi seats lost to Trinamool Congress candidates and Left Front candidates and came third.
Two of them however, spoilt the chances of Trinamool candidates at Hariharpara and Bhagabangola.
TC candidate of Hariharpara, Niamat Sk lost to CPI-M candidate Insar Ali by 6358 votes with the Congress rebel Mir Alamgir Hossain cornering 44,982 votes.
Similarly, rebel Congress candidate Syed Alamgir at Bhagabangola came third getting 40,376 votes with the TC candidate Sagir Hossain losing to Samajwadi Party candidate Chand Md by 13,334 votes.
Two other rebel Congress candidates Aminul Islam and Samsurjoha Biswas in the Sagardighi and Jalangi seats respectively in the district came third.
In neighbouring Nadia district, rebel Congress candidates Amal Mazumdar, Anil Barai and Sarifuddin Munsi came fourth at Karimpur, Krishnagar South, Nakashipara and Kaliganj respectively, with the seats being won by CPI(M)'s Samarendranath Ghosh and Trinamool candidates Ujjawal Biswas, Kallol Khan and Nasiruddin Ahmed respectively.
