As West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) will no more be involved in land acqusition as per the policies of the Mamata Banerjee led government, it will now be asked to focus on promoting skill development in the state, state commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee said on Friday.

WBIDC is a wing of the state's commerce and industry department to support economic development and has so far been primarily involoved in land acqusition for industrial projects across the state.

“The job of WBIDC is to look into promotion of industries in the state. Since it will not be acquiring land any more, we are planning to see that it looks into issues of skill development in the state,” Chatterjee said on the sidelines of the annual general meeting of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry here.

There are also plans to engage WBIDC with different institutions regarding matters of skill development.Seeking to revive the investor confidence in West Bengal, Chatterjee said, “We will not acquire the land. But I want to assure, it will not be a problem. We are working on the creation of a land bank.”

However, he did not comment on the size of the land bank as works for the same is yet to be completed.
