Although it is yet to finalise seat-sharing with the Congress, the Samajwadi Party (SP) today unilaterally declared candidates for 28 seats from Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha elections.
According to a section of the SP leadership, this stance will not only put pressure on the Congress but also signal to other parties — especially the Left — that the party may be game for post-poll alliances. The SP also threatened to review support to the UPA government if it doesn’t attack Pakistan in five days.
The Congress did not attach much importance to this move. “Apart from Rampur, there is no contention over other seats announced by the SP. We can have a friendly contest in Rampur,” said Digvijay Singh, Congress general secretary in charge of UP.
