The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has said the Doha talks of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will benefit India only if developed countries agree to lower their subsidies on agriculture or eliminate them.

The industry body said the subsidy issue should be immediately addressed to remove distortions in international trade.

It said this would also ensure a stable income for farmers in developing countries.

The industry association also feels that the ongoing negotiations should first address the issue of subsidies and then move on to market access.

India should press for greater market access to agricultural exports in developed and developing countries, it said.
