Even as the top Congress leadership plans a joint campaign with the Trinamool Congress (TC), Youth Congress (YC) leaders will launch a special campaign in West Bengal.
The YC campaign assumes significance as the Congress-TC alliance is widely believed to have been struck only because of the special interest Rahul and Sonia Gandhi showed in it. Many state-level leaders were vehemently opposed to forging an alliance with TC chief Mamata Banerjee according to her terms, and accept the fate of a junior partner in the alliance. According to Samrat Tapadar, a YC functionary and member of Rahul Gandhi’s special team, ‘Aam Aadmi Ke Sipahi, “Our campaign will (reflect) Rahul Gandhi’s vision. And the mission will be to make Manmohan Singh the next prime minister.”
The YC has already roped in around 100 young people in different districts of the state for this special campaign. The YC team and Gandhi’s “soldiers” are planning to tour the whole state with their two specific focuses.
Rahul and Sonia too are expected to campaign in the state. While the Congress president may spare two days for Bengal, the junior Gandhi’s tour plan is yet to be finalised.
