Former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari today said the Congress-led UPA government was punished by people on the issues of ill-governance, inflation and corruption.

Gadkari, who made his electoral debut in Lok Sabha polls in Nagpur seat, said people in general and Vidarbha region in Maharashtra in particular have rejected ill-governance of the Congress-led UPA.

"People were fed up with price rise and corruption under the UPA government at Centre and wanted a big change in the leadership in the country," Gadkari told reporters at his residence here.

"Narendra Bhai's leadership led BJP to an unprecedented victory," he said.

Asked about allocation of portfolios in Modi government, Gadkari evaded direct reply but said that he would be glad to shoulder whatever responsibility his party assigns him.
