CPI(M) tally in the 16th parliament will confine to just 8. The party which was the main opposition party in the Parliament in 1960s now has 5 seats from Kerala, 2 from Thripura and just one from West Bengal where it ruled continuously for 25 years.
In Kerala CPI(M) has won Kasargode, Kannur, Palakkad, Alathur and Attingal seats. It had a pathetic defeat in Kollam constituency where politbeaureu member and former Education minister of the state M A Baby has lost to N.K. Premachandran, RSP candidate. The defeat is more pathetic as RSP is an ally in the Left front at the national level. Baby lost to Premachandran, by a margin of 37, 649 votes.
Two Independent candidates supported by CPI(M) have also won in Kerala. Film actor Innocent has defeated veteran leader of Congress and chairman of JPC on 2 G Spectrum scam, P C Chacko at Chalakkudy by a margin of 13,884 votes. Joyce George, an independent candidate has won Idukki seat.
