The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI (M), have decided to snap ties with the J Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), deciding to contest the election on their own in Tamil Nadu.
Last month, the AIADMK, the CPI(M) and the CPI said they had formed an alliance for the coming Lok Sabha elections. During the last 15 days, the Left parties and AIADMK held talks on seat-sharing, but without success, G Ramakrishnan, CPI (M) state secretary said on Wednesday.
After a day-long meeting here on Thursday, the Left parties issued a joint statement, saying as there was no progress in the talks with the AIADMK after several rounds of talks, it was decided the two parties would contest on their own in Tamil Nadu.
Senior party leaders said the Left parties had sought four seats each in Tamil Nadu.
On February 25, Jayalalithaa had announced candidates for all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry. At that time, she had said once a seat-sharing arrangement was finalised, the AIADMK would withdraw its candidates from the seats allotted to the Left.
