Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday had a slugfest over central government’s aid to West Bengal.
“We send crores of rupees to the Bengal government. It's your money and not for the MPs and MLAs here. But the sad fact is, this money reaches Kolkata but not you,” Gandhi said, while addressing a party rally at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.
“People had hoped the new government will work for development, for education, for creating jobs and employment, but unfortunately the Trinamool government has done the same thing for which it fought against the communists,” he said.

However, Banerjee, who was campaigning in North Bengal, retorted to Gandhi's charges. “They are coming and lying to people. The centre is not giving us funds, which we rightfully deserve. They are cheating you. Don't cast a single vote to the Congress,” she said.
While responding to Gandhi's comment on the poor infrastructure in the state, she said, “It is the centre's responsibility to maintain the roads, which are in poor conditions. Some people are trying to mislead the people of Bengal.”
