Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday stepped up his attack against Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, saying the country has grown not due to one person but mainly because of the contribution of the common man.

Rahul took a swipe at Modi for his announcement that India can achieve high growth rate under his leadership in 60 days.

At the well-attended rally in the power loom town Bhiwandi here, Rahul said it would be wrong to say that country has progressed due to one person or a leader.

He reiterated that it was due to the contribution of large number of common man.  He alleged that BJP is not ready to give due credit to common man for India’s growth story.

Rahul said the women representation in the parliament and state legislatures need to further increase. He argued that the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre took a slew of decisions such as Right to Information, Right to Education, Food Security Scheme and Lok Pal Act in a serious bid to further strengthen the common man.

"Congress party is not for rich and wealthy people but for poor. While implementing number of development projects Congress never differentiate," Rahul said.

Separate fisheries ministry?
Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met representatives of the fishing community in Mumbai who put forth demands like the need for a separate ministry and farming status for fisheries. Supporting the demand for a separate ministry, he said it was a good suggestion.
