Stringent measures are in place to keep a check on the use of black money and any violation of the Model Code of Conduct during Lok Sabha elections here, police said today.

"As per the Election Commission's directive, we have set up a total of 24 flying squads, each of them comprising a magistrate, one sub-inspector of police, and three constables," Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural), Varanasi, Pradeep Gupta told PTI.

"There are eight assembly segments in the district. Each segment will be kept under watch by three flying squads", he said.

Gupta, who has been appointed the nodal police officer for elections in the district, said that in addition to the flying squads, an equal number of "static teams" of similar composition will function from various police stations of the district.

These flying squads and static teams will also take necessary action in the event of any violation of model code of conduct coming to light and provide necessary inputs for further investigations, Gupta added.

Five out of the eight assembly constituencies in the district come under the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, which is in spotlight on account of BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi contesting from here.

The political temperature here has been soaring following announcement by Arvind Kejriwal to contest against Modi.
