Karnataka's fate hangs in balance: BJP or Congress, who is going to form govt in Karnataka? writes Aditi Phadnis for Business Standard
Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has remained non-committal on the claims of the parties, asking them to wait until the official tally is declared. Hard numbers play second fiddle to political math, writes Badri Narayan
Prior to Karnataka election results, there was consensus among analysts that Congress may win this election in the absence of any negative issues such as anti-incumbency. However, its Lingayat card backfired and the party failed to meet the anticipation of analysts. The Lingayat community felt the congress wasn't a well wisher of the community in the true sense and only offered it a separate identity with the vested interest of preventing Yedurappa from becoming Chief Minister. This mindset on the part of the community was a key reason that the grand old party delivered the numbers it did.

Karnataka verdict shows BJP's growing dominance
The BJP may have fallen short of the majority mark in Karnataka, but its emergence as the single largest party leaving the Congress far behind has reaffirmed its dominant position on the country's political map.
However, with both the Congress-JD(S) combine and the BJP deciding to stake claim before the Governor to form the government, it was not clear if Karnataka would become the latest state to fall in the saffron kitty.
The BJP and its allies were already in power in 20 of the country's 29 states, with the party enjoying a majority on its own in 16 of them.

People weren't allowed to file nominations. It isn't only BJP people who suffered. People from all the leading parties except the one that rules Bengal suffered. This is serious. A land as great as West Bengal has to see such sights, it is unfortunate: PM Modi
