Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee confident of winning back to power

After the conclusion of the fourth phase of assembly elections in West Bengal, the state's chief minister and leader of Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee expressed her confidence to form the government.

"If I understand any politics, today (fourth phase of the election on April 25) we will have the seats needed (to form the government)", she said during an election campaign here.

Out of a total of 294 seats, so far, the electorate in West Bengal has voted for 216 seats while the Trinamool Congress - the state's ruling party - needs 147 seats to form the government. Banerjee's comments implies her confidence to sweep atleast 68 per cent of the 216 seats to come back to power.

"When the election results will be out, you can tally what I have said", she added.

Her statement comes in wake of her assembly seat nearing the poll day on April 30. In total, the fate of 78 more seats is awaited in the next two phases (April 30 and May 5) of the state elections.

With just a few days to go for the elections, the Trinamool led government was caught amidst repeated controversies. First, in a sting operation, several Trinamool leaders and ministers were caught allegedly accepting bribe and then an under-construction flyover in the city collapsed in the prime hours killing 26 people and leaving several injured.

These two back-to-back incidents had put the party under stress.

On top of it, as the polls began, the opposition, led by the CPI (M) & Congress alliance and BJP started alleging harassment of its supporters, which finally culminated in a CPI (M) polling agent allegedly killed near a polling booth on the third phase of the polls.

With the media in the state actively highlighting these incidents, the Trinamool supremo chose one such media house as her target to hit back.

"One section, rather one media (house) is purportedly spreading misinformation. Don't listen to them. They have some personal interest", she appealed to the voters during her campaign.

She was holding a campaign before different communities namely, Christian, Sikh, Marwari, Jains and others asking people to vote.

"There were 78,00,000 manday loss in the era of the Left rule. Under our tenure, we have made it zero. We'll give all the support you need to run your business and invest further", she said while addressing the business communities.

Interestingly, re-industrialization of West Bengal was the prime election agenda of the Left Front in the ongoing elections which got overshadowed with the repeated crises of a flyover collapse and the Narada tape which struck the Trinamool recently.

Banerjee has been actively trying to project West Bengal as an investment destination by drawing up a campaign plan on Biswa Bangla (Global Bengal) and holding the annual Bengal Global Business Summit which is attended by star-businessmen across the globe.
