One of the under-developed states in India, Bihar is also a fierce political battleground involving strong regional parties.   

Fighting the pandemic, Bihar was a net loser compared to India, as joblessness in the state was nearly twice the national average. Unemployment had come under control at the beginning of the recently-ended tenure of Nitish Kumar.

From late 2017, unemployment in Bihar has remained worse than the national figure, reflecting the income stress in the state.
