In an attempt to better serve its customers in the shipping and energy sectors in India as well as Norwegian companies operating in the country, Norway-based financial services group DnB NOR ASA opened a representative office in Mumbai today.

While formally inaugurating the office, Rune Bjerke, group chief executive of DnB Nor ASA said the Indian market is important to his firm’s future in the Asia region. “Opening this office in the present economic climate underscores our commitment to building our presence in Asia in the long term,” he added.

DnB NOR is a global player in the financial services industry specialising in niche sectors such as shipping, energy and seafood. In India, the firm presently deals with companies in the shipping, offshore, logistics and energy sectors.

The firm’s Mumbai office will house six employees and be headed by Derick Dias who has been appointed chief representative officer. According to Bjerke, the Mumbai office will complement DnB NOR’s Singapore and Shanghai operations and will deepen the bank’s risk assessment and credit expertise to better serve the Asia region.

The group also has a small asset management business based out of Chennai. When asked whether his firm planned to open a branch in the country, Bjerke replied that they were only focusing on the representative office for the time being.
