Some public sector banks want to offload illiquid government securities for tax incentives.

These incentives are available to banks if the gains are used for cleaning their balance-sheets. The banks include Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and Central Bank of India.

However, weaker banks are unlikely to sell their securities as the gilts are high-yielding and parting with them will affect their profitability.
