Bank officers have put off their one-day strike scheduled for Thursday to protest a three-year-old wage settlement, the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) stated today.
"An understanding was reached between IBA and four industry-level officers' organisations in the presence of the deputy chief labour commissioner," IBA stated in a press release. Following this understanding reached, the organisations have deferred the all-India strike scheduled for August 29, IBA added.
The issues raised by the four organisations will be discussed further in the second fortnight of September 2002. About 2 lakh officers, belonging to the All India Bank Officers' Confederation, the All India Bank Officers' Association, the Indian National Bank Officers' Congress and the National Organisation of Bank Officers, had proposed to go on a one-day strike on Thursday to protest the wage settlement which they say gave more benefits to clerical staff.

The strike was expected to affect key functions such as clearing of cheques and trading in the financial markets.
Aside from the anomalies arising out of the last wage revision, which saw clerical staff getting more benefits, the four organisations have also raised the issues on the failure on part of the management to review the existing compensation in light of the increased post-VRS work load.
The latter is more apparent with issues relating to vigilance and disciplinary proceedings and general tendency of managements to bypass the bilateral mechanism.
