Indian Bank is planning to penetrate rural India through kirana stores, and plans to turn its retired employees into business correspondents in areas, where it does not have a branch.

TM Bhasin, chairman and managing director, said the bank had started this financial inclusion initiative on a pilot basis in Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry. Currently, around 300 business correspondents drawn from rural areas were being trained.

“We are planning to use kirana shops, petrol bunks and kiosks to reach out to rural India,” said Bhasin.
