In 2013, the largest number of kidney-related claims came from kidney failure followed by stones and infections in the urinary system. Compared to the previous year, claims on kidney failure grew 57 per cent in 2013, while claims related to infective or metabolic disorders of kidney rose 55 per cent.
Sanjay Datta, chief (underwriting and claims) at ICICI Lombard, said there are no specific plans for kidney-related ailments offered by any insurance company as of now. “However, all kidney-related ailments / procedures including dialysis are covered as routine hospitalisation under our health policy if developed after policy inception,” he added.
Further, the company offers critical illness cover plus donor expense personal accident cover. Under this cover, a benefit amount is paid on the diagnosis of critical illness (including end-stage renal failure) or a reimbursement is made up to Rs 50,000 for medical expenses as incurred by organ donor for undergoing organ transplant surgery for the insured’s use.
According to insurance industry players, going forward, covers for kidney failure and organ donation will be more widespread. The CEO of a mid-sized general insurance company explained that with the number of kidney-ailment related claims rising in the non-life space, companies will also begin to offer specific products.
With respect to the different cities, ICICI Lombard data said that the national capital region (NCR) contributed the largest number of kidney-related claims in 2013. Also, compared to 2012, the incidence of kidney-related claims in 2013 rose by 75 per cent in NCR followed by 73 per cent in Hyderabad, 67 per cent in Kolkata and 40 per cent in Bangalore.
The two age groups, which filed the largest number of kidney-related claims were 26-35 years and 56-65 years. The kidney-related claims have increased significantly in 2013 compared to 2012 for the higher age groups.
