The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asked all the lead and convener banks of the State Level Bankers Committee to initiate steps to open a large number of bank accounts for implementing the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme of the Central Government.
In a circular, RBI said the banks should take steps to open bank accounts and seed Aadhar numbers in them in districts identified under the DBT scheme. It advised banks to closely monitor the progress in seeding Aadhar numbers in bank accounts of beneficiaries.
The banks should issue the acknowledgement of the seeding request to the beneficiary and once seeded, they should give a confirmation of seeding the Aadhar number to the beneficiary.
The lead banks should form a DBT Implementation Coordination Committee with the department concerned of the state government at the district level and review the seeding of Aadhar numbers.
The SLBC website should display district and villages names with business correspondents or any other arrangements made by the bank, RBI said.
Each bank should set up a complaint grievance redressal mechanism and there should be a complaint redressal officer in each district to address complaints related to the seeding of Aadhar numbers, RBI said in its circular.
