The rupee was off highs in aftertoon trade but was still quoting stronger against previous close.

At 12:10 pm, the rupee was quoting at Rs 61.56 compared with previous close of Rs 61.65 per dollar. The rupee had opened at Rs 61.10 today.

According to currency dealers, month-end dollar demand is keeping the rupee under pressure.

The rupee appreciated in early trade as the latest US non-farm payroll data raised hopes that US tapering will be delayed.

The data showed that the US jobless rate fell to 7.2% in September from 7.3% the previous month but job creations remained sluggish.
