The Indian rupee today rose marginally by nine paise to 49.68 against the greenback in early trade on fresh capital inflows by foreign funds.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit was quoted higher at 49.68 a $, up by nine paise over the previous close of 49.77/78.
However, hardening of $ against other major currencies capped rupee's gains against the $ to some extent.
Forex dealers said fresh capital inflows by foreign funds in the back of firming trend in other Asian stock markets, mainly supported the rupee movement.
The rupee had ended 8 paise lower at 49.77/78 against the $ yesterday.
