Rupee trades around 61/dollar in afternoon

Strong gains in domestic market boost rupee

The rupee extended its gains for the fourth day, and continued to trade around 61 per dollar after rising to a three-month high of 60.9450. It was last trading at 61.01/02 vs Thursday's close of 61.11/12.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram said he expects current account deficit to come in below $40 billion from $45 billion estimate in the interim budget.

Stocks are trading with big gains, with Sensex up 1.7%.

Overseas investors continue heavy buying of Indian shares. At $207.84 million on Thursday, it was their biggest daily purchase since December 19, provisional exchange data shows.
