The Union Minister for Rural Development Shri Nitin Gadkari said that Government will launch skill development training centres on a large scale to address the problem of unemployment particularly in rural India. Launching the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana here, the Minister said, skills imparted under the programme will now be benchmarked against international standards. He said, the kaushalya yojana will complement the Prime Minister's Make In India campaign.

Shri Gadkari said that by 2020, developed countries will have a shortfall of over 57 million semi-skilled workers while India is expected to have a surplus of 47 million. He said, countries like United States, UK, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, China and Spain and the Middle East Countries have high demand for skilled manpower, where Indian rural youth can be absorbed after they acquire industry-specific training.

The programme aims to train 10 lakh rural youths by 2017. The Minister also underlined the need for imparting training to differently abled persons. Shri Gadkari also asked the private sector to chip in a big way in this mission.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Upendra Kushwaha said, unemployment is a big problem in the country and rural youth despite having merit do not get jobs. He said, keeping this mis-match, the Government has decided to scale up the skill development scheme.

Shri L.C.Goyal, Secretary, Rural Development Ministry said that only 10 lakh youths were trained during the last ten years, while 12 million people enter workforce every year.
