About Three and Half Lakh Cases Relating to Electricity\Water\Telephone\Public Utility Disputes were Settled at National Lok Adalats Organized Across the Country Today.

About three and half lakh cases relating to electricity\water\telephone and other public utility disputes were settled at national lok adalats organized across the country today. Of these about three lakh are new cases. The total value of settlement reached today is Rs. 113 crores.

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has been organizing National LokAdalats on every second Saturday for the past few months on specific subject matters in accordance with a Calendar for this under the directions of the Hon'ble Mr. Justice T.S.Thakur, Judge, Supreme Court of India & Executive Chairman, NALSA and Hon'ble Mr. Justice H.L.Dattu, Chief Justice of India & Patron-in-Chief, NALSA. Cases at pre-litigation stage and those pending in courts were taken up for settlement at today's National LokAdalat. The aim is to reduce pendency as well as prevent additional litigation swathing the courts, where settlements are possible. Through the National LokAdalats, the attention of the public has been drawn to the efficacious Alternative Dispute Resolution method of LokAdalat. There will be no further appeal in those matters settled today. Thus, it will have a significant impact on the overall judicial system. On the other hand, the settlement at pre-litigation stage would mean that, that many cases will never reach the courts.
