The Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal took a meeting today to discuss the issue of Ms. Sarita Devi, Boxer who has been provisionally suspended by Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA). Among others Shri Sachin Tendulkar, Member of Parliament, Shri Vijender Singh, Boxer, Shri Ajit M. Sharan, Secretary ( Sports), Shri Jiji Thomson, Director General, Sports Authority of India and Shri Sandeep Jajodia, President, Boxing India attended the meeting.
All legal and other aspects relating to the matter were discussed in detail. The participants in the meeting expressed serious concern in the matter. They felt that Sarita Devi is a prominent sportsperson who comes from a very humble background and has risen very high in her sport due to her hard work, perseverance and talent. The entire country is behind her. It was decided to appeal to AIBA to take into consideration the circumstances of her case for resolution of the matter sympathetically and revoke the suspension imposed on her and the coaches.
