There is no requirement of a national policy for CCTV Recordings at public places in the matter. The installation of CCTV Cameras is a security feature for the safety of public places, which is done voluntarily by private entities or on the directions of police authorities. The security agencies also install CCTV Cameras in public places for monitoring security threats/ traffic etc. It involves no privacy issue since CCTV recording of normal human behaviour in public places is overt surveillance and does not intrude into their private space.
There is no bar/ restriction on a person wanting to see his/ her own CCTV recording. However, such requests should be made to agencies/ entities concerned.
This was stated by Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju in Lok Sabha today.
