The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has said that there is no negligence by Sports Authority of India (SAI) centres. The closure of a Centre is a policy decision, which is taken based on certain parameters like lack of trainees in sports disciplines, lack of requisite resources, non-performance of the trainees, etc.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Shri Sonowal said, Special Area Games centre of SAI at Muzzafarpur, Bihar was closed down w.e.f. 1.4.2013 due to the law and order situation which had forced the hostel canteen to be closed. There was also frequent interference of local people who were utilizing sports grounds without taking permission.
Reopening of the said centre can be considered by SAI only after the Memorandum of Understating is signed between the State Government of Bihar and SAI and after the State Government improves the condition of the centre like residential accommodation, etc., the Minister added.
