Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been entrusted with maintenance / construction of approximately over 30,000 kms of roads in the country including North-Eastern region. 61 roads as Indo-China Border Roads (ICBRs) of total length 3410 km have been entrusted to BRO. Out of which, 17 ICBRs have been completed including 10 ICBRs in North East. There are delays in execution mainly due to the following reasons:
o Delay in Forest / Wildlife clearance.
o Hard rock stretches.
o Limited working season.
o Difficulties in availability of construction material.
o Delay in Land Acquisition.
o Due to natural disaster such as flash flood of Leh in 2010, J&K flood in 2014 and Earthquake in Sikkim in 2011, resources were diverted.
Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road of total length 317.52 km in State of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh is entrusted to BRO for improvement to National Highways Double Lane (NHDL) specifications, out of which approximately 142 km has been completed. Improvement work on Pithoragarh-Tawaghat road for double laning between km 0 to km 16 has been completed. The probable date of completion of improvement work for double laning for the entire road i.e. up to 107.60 km is March 2020.
The road Tawaghat to Lipulekh of total length 95.05 km is entrusted to BRO for improvement to Double Lane Specifications, out of which approximately 10 km has been completed.Certain issues have been raised regarding dilapidated / damages condition of 5 roads in Rajasthan. Out of 5 roads, 1 road (Bap-Bikampur) has been completed, 1 road (Ramdevra-Nachna-Bharewala) work is planned for completion during 2015-16, 1 road (Barmer-Chohtan-Kelnor) work is planned for completion during current financial year. 2 roads (Bidasar-Sridungargarh and Suratgarh-Anupgarh) where rehabilitation / strengthening works was planned, are now to be handed over to State PWD.
