Policing on public places including National Highways is a State subject. The State Government is presently registering, investigating and prosecuting offences under various laws, including the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. The draft Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2015 proposes to introduce the chapter namely, National Highway Traffic Protection Services to ensure enforcement of traffic regulation, reduce road crashes, make national highways safer for road users.
This Ministry has introduced pilot project of cashless treatment for road accident victims on the three stretches of national highways. The objective of the project is to save lives of accident victims by providing prompt and appropriate medical care during 'Golden Hour, and thereby reduce fatalities in road accidents. The project envisages transport of accident victims from the accident scene to hospital and, where required, from one hospital to another for treatment at a public or private hospital for the first 48 hours or Rs. 30,000/-, whichever is earlier. Following are the three stretches of national highways on which pilot project has been started:
i. Gurgaon-Jaipur of NH-8
ii. Ahmedabad-Mumbai stretch of NH-8
iii. Ranchi-RargaonMahulia stretch of NH-33
