Government has received representations from late Shri Gopinath Munde, the then Deputy leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Dr. D. Purandeshwari, the then Minister of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Kirit Somaiya, MP, Lok Sabha and Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping and others for conversion of the Ship into a maritime museum.

The ship was de-commissioned in January 1997. Government of Maharashtra (GoM) proposed to convert the ship into a maritime museum in November 1998 and Ministry of Defence approved free transfer of the ship to GoM in 1999. But, GoM indicated in December 2012 its inability to stay committed to the project. Therefore, considering the material state of the ship and practical constraints in maintaining the ship, a decision had been taken in June 2013 for its disposal as scrap. The feasibility of converting the ship into a museum was again examined in view of the representations. However, it was not found to be feasible.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri P. C Mohan in Lok Sabha today.
