As a part of efforts to contain pollution of River Yamuna, Urban Development Minister Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu today inaugurated the Interceptor Sewer at Dwarka Sector-13. This is the first of the six such interceptor sewers being constructed accounting for a total length of about 59 kms. at a cost of Rs.1,962 cr. Interceptor sewer at Dwarka will trap the sewage from Pappankalan drain which discharges about 10 million gallons per day of sewage into Najafgarh main drain. Sewage trapped at Dwarka will be pumped to Sewage Treatment Plant at Dwarka.
Shri Venkaiah Naidu later commissioned six Water ATMs for the benefit of about 20,000 residents of Dwarka Sector-3 and Sahyog Vihar. These ATMs, based on 'Reverse Osmosis' technology supplies water conforming to WHO norms. Quality water is available 24 x 7 at these ATMs at 20 paise per litre at filtration point and at Rs.7.50 for 20 litres for home delivery.
Later, addressing a public meeting, Shri Venkaiah Naidu expressed concern over pollution in the River Yamuna and stressed on the need to ensure that untreated sewerage is not released into the river. He said, for the city of Delhi, there is a need for sewerage treatment capacity of 684 MGD as against the available 604 MGD. He said, the shortfall will soon be removed with the completion of 4 STPs at Yamuna Vihar(25 MGD), Dwarka(20 MGD), Nilothi(20 MGD) and Delhi Gate (15 MGD). Shri Naidu said, the remaining five interceptors sewers at Nilothi/Keshopur, Rohini/Rithola, Shahdra North and South and Cornonation Pillar will be commissioned next year. These interceptor sewers will trap sewage from over 1,600 drains for pumping into respective STPs before released into Yamuna through the three main drains of Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdra drains.
The Minister observed that with the commissioning of all the interceptor sewers and new STPs, the quality of Yamuna River will significantly improve. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), a measure of pollution will improve from the present 41 ppm to 12 ppm.
Expressing concern over water shortage of 300 MGD in the national capital and particularly, in Dwakra area, Shri Naidu said that issues relating to water supply through Munak Canal will be sorted out soon by holding discussions with the new government in Haryana. He directed the Delhi Jal Board to install a total of 500 water ATMs in water scarce areas at the earliest.
