Multi-Stakeholder approach to Internet Governance discussed at a meeting coordinated by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) today

Recently, India declared its commitment toward multi-stakeholder approach to Internet governance. Today, pursuant to the above declaration and as a part of series of ongoing multi-stakeholder discussions, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in collaboration with National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) conducted a multi-stakeholder consultation to discuss the Zero Draft in relation to the ongoing overall review by the General Assembly of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+10 Review).

The Review process will be concluded by a High-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on December 15-16, 2015 in New York. Currently, the United Nations is facilitating a preparatory process for the WSIS+10 Review in consultation with Member States and relevant stakeholders.

The main aim of the meeting is to conduct a ten year review of the WSIS outcomes documents, as envisaged in Paragraph 111 of the Tunis Agenda, 2005.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders from business, civil society, government, academia and technical community, and also some remote participation. The discussion was moderated by Shri. Rahul Gosain, Director, DeitY, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The discussion touched upon issues related to the priorities for India at the global level inter alia digital divide, ICT for development, human rights, Internet Governance, Enhanced Cooperation and follow up, review and implementation of WSIS action lines. The inputs from the stakeholder will be taken into account to develop India's position on overall WSIS +10 review process.

The discussion was concluded with a call for Indian stakeholders to actively participate in the WSIS+10 Review process.
