National Urban Health Mission

The National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) has been approved as a sub-mission under an overarching National Health Mission (NHM) on 1st May 2013 for providing equitable and quality primary health care services to the urban population with special focus on slum and vulnerable population.

The NUHM covers all cities and towns with more than 50,000 population as well as district headquarters and state headquarters having population between 30,000- 50,000.

It envisages for setting up of Urban Primary Health Centre (U-PHC) for population more than 50,000 and Urban Community Health Centre (U-CHC) in cities with more than five lakh population and targeted interventions for slum areas such as Accredited Social Health Activists and Mahila Arogya Samiti. It also provides for augmentation of Human Resources in terms of medical, para-medical and program management staff.

The Health Minister, Shri J P Nadda stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha here today.
