Naval and Coast Guard ships are fitted with appropriate weaponry and modern navigation / communication systems.

The Defence Shipyards have embarked upon expansion and modernization plan to cater for Integrated Modular Construction, to reduce the build period for ships, at four Defence Shipyards at a total cost of Rs.1785.21 crore. Majority of warships for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard are constructed by Defence Shipyards while some non-weapon ships are also constructed by private shipyards.

Assessment of defence preparedness is a dynamic process, keeping in view the threat perception. Government takes appropriate measures, including modernization, to maintain operational preparedness of the forces, design capabilities of Indian Navy are also utilized for modernization of war vessels.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Smt Santosh Ahlawat and Dr. J Jayavardhanin Lok Sabha today.
